7 Data discrepancies

Data values in NAPMD is generally presented as provided by the state and territory agencies, with alterations made only for formatting and standardisation of units. Values may differ from those currently available from the source agencies if data has been updated since received by NAPMD.

Please note that though most data has undergone validation by the state and territory agencies, there may be unrealistic or improbable values present. Some values are clearly incorrect (for example, air pressure readings well beyond the typical 980-1100 hPa range) but others may be indicative of an unusual event (for instance, a dust storm).

Conduct your own data checks and consider what range of values you consider to be reasonable for your pollutant of interest.

7.1 Specific changes to historical ACT data

  1. Duplicated hourly data for 2020-02-29

The duplicate hourly values which are not identical have been averaged.

  1. Exceptionally high NO2 for Civic station, February 2003

There were 5 NO2 readings for Civic Feb 2003 which were exceptionally high – these were removed after a discussion with ACT Health and it was agreed that they were improbable and likely caused by a glitch in the equipment (which was serviced shortly after this period).

Date Hour NO2
2003/02/03 21:00:00 1.673
2003/02/03 17:00:00 1.348
2003/02/03 18:00:00 0.958
2003/02/03 19:00:00 0.673
2003/02/03 20:00:00 0.530
  1. Spurious nephelometer values in 2011/2012

There were a series of 0 or 9999 values for nephelometer readings in 2011/2012. ACT stopped measuring visibility around this time, so these values are most likely spurious (in any case, not useful). All of these were dropped.
